Gate Drive – How to Choose the Right One?

Automatic gates are now virtually everywhere. They stopped being a symbol of luxury long ago and are now installed by anyone who values comfort and convenience. However, one key aspect remains: choosing the right gate drive to ensure it functions properly and reliably.

Why Does Choosing the Right Gate Drive Matter?

A well-functioning gate operator is something users barely think about. Many owners of automatic gates instinctively reach for the remote when entering their property, without giving it a second thought. When that’s the case, it’s a clear sign the system is working flawlessly.

Today’s market offers a wide range of products that differ not only in price or durability but also in compatibility with different types of gates. That’s why selecting the right drive is essential to ensure your gate operates reliably.

What to Consider When Buying a Gate Operator?

Most manufacturers specify which drive is suitable based on the gate’s weight and other parameters. To choose the most appropriate drive, you should consider:

  • the type of gate,

  • the technical condition of the gate, rollers, and track,

  • the length of the gate,

  • the frequency of use (number of daily cycles),

  • the weight of the gate.

Swing Gates

Because choosing a gate operator requires the equipment to match the specific gate type, the best solution is to purchase the drive together with the gate. This ensures full compatibility and smooth operation of the entire system.

However, if you’re adding automation months or even years after installation, the device must be selected based on the specific parameters of the existing gate.

Sliding Gates

First, check whether the gate moves smoothly when operated manually. Any friction or resistance may affect the performance of the automatic system.

Next, consider the number of users and the expected daily number of cycles. If the gate will be used frequently, opt for a 24 V motor designed for intensive use.

Keep in mind: the longer the gate, the longer each cycle takes — which means the motor heats up more quickly and may wear out faster. Choosing the right power level can help extend its lifespan.

Swing Gates (Two-Leaf or Single-Leaf)

Selecting the right automation for a swing gate can be more challenging. The key parameter is the length of the gate leaf. Each actuator is designed to handle a specific maximum length.

Also pay attention to the gate leaf’s construction. If it is fully covered with metal panels, it will be more susceptible to strong wind gusts. In such cases, more powerful and longer actuators are recommended.

Another important factor is the weight of each gate leaf. Every drive has a defined maximum load capacity, and it’s best not to operate at the limit.

Finally, consider how often the gate is used. Usage above 50 daily cycles is considered intensive, and in such cases, a 24 V motor is recommended.
